  Carthamus is a small genus of 14 Mediterranean thistle species, five of which can found in Greece.

Carthamus lanatus, also known as Carthamus creticus, is a thistle of Europe and the Mediterranean region, and a usually quite woolly plant as the name suggests, at least at the plant's first stages of growth. Although quite widespread, this medium-size plant is rather inconspicuous, and may appear more appealing when dry in winter. One of the most distinctive and beautiful forms of its stem structure is that resembling a candlestick. The straight erect stems are covered with small leaves that stay attached long after the plant dries up.

  Το γένος Carthamus είναι ένα ολιγάριθμο γένος 14 Μεσογειακών ειδών αγκαθιών, πέντε από τα οποία απαντώνται και στην Ελλάδα.

Ο Carthamus lanatus, γνωστός και ως Carthamus creticus, είναι ένα είδος αγκαθιού της Ευρώπης και της Μεσογείου, που όπως δηλώνει το όνομά του πρόκειται συνήθως για ένα μαλλιαρό φυτό, τουλάχιστον στα πρώτα στάδια ανάπτυξής του. Παρότι αρκετά διαδεδομένο, αυτό το μεσαίου μεγέθους φυτό δεν προκαλεί εύκολα εντύπωση, όμως μπορεί να γίνει εντυπωσιακό όταν ξεραθεί μέσα στον χειμώνα. Μία από τις πιο χαρακτηριστικές μορφές του σκελετού του είναι εκείνη που μοιάζει με κηροπήγιο. Οι ευθείς, όρθιοι βλαστοί είναι καλυμμένοι με μικρά φύλλα τα οποία παραμένουν κολλημένα στο φυτό αφού ξεραθεί.
