More Carduus

Carduus pycnocephalus.

  Carduus pycnocephalus is a common annual thistle of Europe that has naturalized in many other parts of the world. Commonly known as the Italian thistle, this small-flowered species is usually found in disturbed sites and waste areas, and has foliage with milky veins similar to that of the Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum). The name pycnocephalus refers to the flower heads that form clusters.

  Carduus acanthoides is a biennial thistle native to most of Europe and Western Asia. Its stems are multi-branched and densely covered with very distinctive spines, and the small violet flower heads are either solitary or form small clusters. 

The third species, below, is a tall and slender thistle that produces very distinctive flower heads with pale violet or white flowers that are usually slightly drooping. This species basal leaves are also milky veined, although much smaller.

  Το είδος Carduus pycnocephalus είναι ένα αρκετά κοινό μονοετές είδος αγκαθιού της Ευρώπης, το οποίο έχει εγκατασταθεί και σε άλλες περιοχές του πλανήτη. Η κοινή αγγλική του ονομασία είναι Ιταλικό αγκάθι, και φυτρώνει συνήθως σε μπάζα και σε χέρσα εδάφη. Τα φύλλα του έχουν λευκές φλέβες όπως του Silybum marianum, ενώ τα μικρά του λουλούδια σχηματίζουν μικρά συμπλέγματα.

  Ο  Carduus acanthoides είναι ένα είδος αγκαθιού της Ευρώπης και της Δυτικής Ασίας. Οι βλαστοί του είναι συνήθως έντονα διακλαδισμένοι και πυκνά καλυμμένοι από πολύ χαρακτηριστικά αγκάθια, ενώ τα σχετικά μικρά κεφάλια των βιολετί λουλουδιών σχηματίζουν μικρά συμπλέγματα ή είναι μονήρη.

 Το τρίτο είδος, πιο κάτω, είναι ένα ψηλόλιγνο φυτό το οποίο παράγει χαρακτηριστικά γερμένα κεφάλια λουλουδιών με λευκά ή απαλά βιολετί άνθη. Και σ΄ αυτό το είδος τα φύλλα της βάσης, παρότι μικρότερα, έχουν λευκές φλέβες.
