Polygonum arenarium

Beautiful bead-like flowers of Polygonum arenarium.

  There is a group of closely related plants within the genus Polygonum, that have very slender stems, small leaves or almost lacking any leaves, and very miniature flowers that are either barely visible or brightly colored. This, along with the next five entries are of such related species: Polygonum arenarium, Polygonum rurivagum, Polygonum equisetiforme, Polygonum aviculare, Polygonum arenastrum and Polygonum maritimum. Some of these plants may appear significantly different when mature, in autumn, than they were in spring.

European or Lesser Red Knotgrass, Polygonum arenarium, is an annual plant of southeastern Europe and Turkey, with spreading stems and sparse leaves. This is a species with a tap-root, that grows, as the name "arenarium" suggests, on sand or sandy soil. Although the plant blooms starting in late spring, the most interesting and vibrant colors occur in autumn, until late November.

  Υπάρχει μια ομάδα φυτών που εμφανίζουν στενή συγγένεια εντός του γένους Polygonum, με πολύ λεπτά στελέχη, μικρά φύλλα ή σχεδόν απουσία φύλλων, και μικροσκοπικά λουλούδια τα οποία είναι είτε σχεδόν αφανή ή έντονα χρωματισμένα. Το Polygonum arenarium είναι ένα μονοετές φυτό της νοτιοανατολικής Ευρώπης και της Τουρκίας, με βλαστούς που συνήθως έρπουν και με λιγοστά φύλλα. Πρόκειται για ένα είδος με βαθειά κεντρική ρίζα το οποίο φυτρώνει στην άμμο ή σε αμμώδη εδάφη, όπως φανερώνει και το όνομα "arenarium". Παρόλο που ανθίζει από τα τέλη της άνοιξης, τα πιο ζωηρά χρώματα εμφανίζονται το φθινόπωρο, όταν το φυτό είναι ώριμο, μέχρι τα τέλη του Νοέμβρη.
