Euphorbia helioscopia

  Euphorbia is a very large and diverse genus, with approximately 2,000 species, most of which are tropical and subtropical succulent plants, from Africa, the Americas and Madagascar. The species found in more temperate regions, are commonly referred to as Spurges, due to the use of their sap as a purgative. The plants have a very caustic and poisonous, milky-white sap, that flows when they are cut or bruised, and congeals after a few minutes in the air. It is because of this that most animals avoid feeding on them. Poinsettia (Ephorbia pulcherrima) is one of the very popular plants of this genus.
The rather unusual flowers (called cyathia) are organized in umbels, and the fruits are capsules. They are very distinctive, and of a green-yellowlime color. In Greece there are 49 species to be found.

Euphorbia helioscopia, also known as Sun Spurge, is a very widespread early spring flower, in most of Europe, N. Africa, and Asia. It is an annual plant, that turns to the sun, as its latinized Greek name "helio-scopia" suggests. The plants are short (max 50 cm high) with a single, erect, hairless stem. They are also short-lived, and wither with the first waves of heat at the end of April.

  Το γένος Euphorbia είναι ένα πολυπληθές και πολυποίκιλο γένος, το οποίο αριθμεί περίπου τα 2.000 είδη, τα περισσότερα από τα οποία είναι τροπικά και υποτροπικά παχύφυτα της Αφρικής, της Αμερικής, και της Μαδαγασκάρης. Τα είδη που απαντώνται σε πιο εύκρατες περιοχές είναι γνωστά για τη χρήση του χυμού τους ως ισχυρού καθαρτικού. Όλα τα φυτά του γένους έχουν έναν γαλακτώδη καυστικό και τοξικό χυμό, ο οποίος αναβλύζει όταν κοπούν ή τρυπηθούν, και στεγνώνει στον αέρα μέσα σε λίγα λεπτά. Αυτός είναι και ο λόγος που τα ζώα τα αποφεύγουν. Το γνωστό "Αλεξανδρινό" των Χριστουγέννων (Euphorbia pulcherrima) είναι ένα από τα πολύ δημοφιλή φυτά του γένους.
Τα σχετικά ασυνήθιστα άνθη είναι οργανωμένα σε ημισφαίρια, ενώ οι καρποί είναι μικρές στρογγυλές κάψουλες. Έχουν δε, ένα πολύ χαρακτηριστικό ανοικτό πικροπράσινο χρώμα. Στην Ελλάδα μπορεί κανείς να συναντήσει 49 είδη.

Η Euphorbia helioscopia είναι ένα πολύ διαδεδομένο ανοιξιάτικο λουλούδι στην Ευρώπη, τη Β. Αφρική και την Ασία. Είναι ένα μονοετές φυτό, το οποίο στρέφεται στον ήλιο, όπως δηλώνει και το όνομά του. Έχει μικρό ύψος (< 50 εκ.), έναν όρθιο λείο βλαστό, και διαρκεί λίγο, μέχρι τις πρώτες ζέστες στα τέλη του Απρίλη.
