Salvia sclarea

Amazing Clary Sage, Salvia sclarea.

Salvia sclarea or Clary Sage, is an amazing aromatic plant with large leaves and very distinctive white, violet-lilac bracts, the same color as the flowers, with darker borders. This biennial or short-lived herbaceous perennial plant is a Mediterranean species found from Southern Europe to Syria. Salvia sclarea has a long history of use both as a medicinal and as an ornamental plant. An essential oil is obtained from the flowering stems and the leaves, called "Muscatel oil", rich in omega 3 fatty acids, and used in cosmetics and as a flavoring for wines.
Salvia sclarea is found growing on mountain meadows and open woodland, and, like most of the Salvia species in Greece, blooms May through June.
