  Blue is not a very common color for flowers. Why would nature need blue flowers when there is the endless blue sky and the vast sea, one may think, but there are quite a few, and they are very inspiring!

  Veronica is a very large genus of flowering plants with approximately 300 species (or 500?). It is a group of plants with small, light flowers, most of which are blue tinted. There are also other colors like white, pink and violet, but in many occasions, by the flower alone one can tell its a veronica. In Greece there are 47 species and subspecies to be found.

Veronica persica, also known as Bird's Eye, is an annual herbaceous plant that is very often found growing in the city, mostly in lawns. Native to Europe and Asia, it is widespread today in most temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It has weak stems that form a dense, prostrate ground cover. The small, four-petaled flowers are sky-blue with dark blue stripes and a white center, and they have a vertical symmetry (zygomorphic). They are also some of the very first flowers to bloom in spring. Bird's Eye is a small plant, not easily noticed, but it is very rewarding once you get to know it.

  Το μπλε χρώμα δεν φαίνεται να είναι και πολύ κοινό στα λουλούδια. Θα έλεγε κανείς, πως με τόσο ουρανό και τόση θάλασσα τι να το κάνει κι άλλο μπλε χρώμα η φύση. Όμως υπάρχουν αρκετά, και η παρουσία τους είναι ιδιαίτερα εντυπωσιακή.

  Το γένος Veronica είναι ένα πολύ μεγάλο γένος ανθοφόρων φυτών, με περίπου 300 είδη (ή 500;). Είναι μια ομάδα φυτών με μικρά λεπτεπίλεπτα άνθη, τα περισσότερα από τα οποία είναι χρωματισμένα σε μπλε τόνους. Υπάρχουν και άλλα χρώματα όπως λευκό, ροζ και ιώδες, αλλά σε πολλές περιπτώσεις, και μόνο από το λουλούδι μπορεί κανείς να αποτανθεί πως πρόκειται για βερόνικα. Στην Ελλάδα απαντώνται 47 είδη και υποείδη.

Η Veronica persica (κοινώς "γαλαζάκι") είναι ένα μικρό μονοετές φυτό με ισχνούς βλαστούς, το οποίο σχηματίζει έναν πυκνό τάπητα στο έδαφος. Ενδημικό της Ευρώπης και της Ασίας, σήμερα είναι διαδεδομένο στις περισσότερες εύκρατες περιοχές του βόρειου ημισφαιρίου. Τα μικρά γαλάζια άνθη του που έχουν σκούρες μπλε ραβδώσεις και λευκό πυρήνα, έχουν τέσσερα πέταλα τα οποία παρουσιάζουν μία κάθετη συμμετρία. Είναι δε από τα πρώτα λουλούδια της άνοιξης. Παρότι είναι ένα πολύ μικρό φυτό, που εύκολα περνάει απαρατήρητο, η ανταμοιβή είναι μεγάλη για εκείνον που το προσέχει.
