  Tilia platyphyllos, commonly known as large-leaved Linden (or Lime), is a large and impressive deciduous tree, native to Europe. It is also one of the five species of the Tilia genus found in Greece.
The leaves of all Tilia species are beautiful, heart-shaped, whereas the fragrant, yellowish-white flowers that bloom in june, are always hanging attached to an unusual, ribbon-like, greenish-yellow bract. It is a long-lived tree with a dense foliage, that makes wonderful shade.
The timber of linden trees is soft, with very little grain, which make it a popular wood for modeling and wood carving.
Herbal tea made from the flowers, is slightly aromatic, with a mild sedative, diuretic and antispasmodic action.

  Η Tilia platyphyllos είναι ένα από τα πέντε είδη φλαμουριάς, ή αλλιώς φιλύρας, που απαντώνται στην Ελλάδα. Ενδημικό φυτό της Ευρώπης, η αιωνόβια πλατύφυλλη φλαμουριά είναι ένα ιδιαίτερα μεγάλο και εντυπωσιακό δέντρο, με καλοσχηματισμένο πυκνό φύλλωμα που κάνει μια θαυμάσια σκιά.
Τα φύλλα όλων των ειδών φλαμουριάς είναι όμορφα, στο σχήμα καρδιάς, ενώ τα αρωματικά υποκίτρινα λουλούδια τους, που ανθίζουν τον ιούνιο, κρέμονται πάντα προσκολλημένα σε ένα ασυνήθιστο κιτρινοπράσινο βράχτιο φύλλο, που μοιάζει με κορδέλλα.
Το ξύλο της φλαμουριάς είναι μαλακό και χωρίς νερά, πράγμα που το κάνει ιδιαίτερα δημοφιλές ως ξύλο για μοντελισμό και χαρακτική.
Τα άνθη κάνουν ένα ελαφρώς αρωματικό τσάι το οποίο έχει ηρεμιστική, διουρητική και αντισπασμωδική δράση.

Crataegus monogyna

Very distinctive, small and deeply lobed leaves of common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna).

  Common hawthorn, Crataegus monogyna (a more appropriate name than Crataegus oxyacantha), is a species of hawthorn native to Europe, northwest Africa and western Asia. This single-seeded hawthorn is one of the nine species and subspecies of the Crataegus genus found in Greece. Although it can grow to the size of a large tree, this long-lived plant occurs mostly as a densely branched, small tree or bush, in relatively low elevation.
Very distinctive are the deeply lobed, small leaves, and the strongly scented, white blossoms with red stamens that bloom in mid spring - they are often called mayflowers, and the tree May-tree. Although a deciduous and thorny plant, Crataegus monogyna is widely used in trimmed hedges - the name hawthorn is thought to mean "hedge thorn" from its widespread use as a stock-proof barrier in the English countryside.
Hawthorn wood is a dense, heavy and tough wood [the word crataegus originates from the Greek "κραταιός" (krataeos) meaning strong, hard]. The leaves, blossoms and red, berry-like fruit are well known as highly recommended medicine for the heart - hawthorn is generally considered as "food for the heart". The fruit ("haws") is also used in jams and preserves.
Meeting this plant in the woods makes for a special and meaningful encounter - being protected and on the right path.

  Ο κράταιγος, Crataegus monogyna (ένα όνομα πιο ακριβές και κατάλληλο από το Crataegus oxyacantha), είναι φυτό ενδημικό της Ευρώπης, δυτικής Ασίας και βορειοδυτικής Αφρικής. Το μονόσπερμο αυτό είδος κράταιγου, είναι ένα από τα εννιά είδη και υποείδη του γένους Crataegus που απαντώνται στην Ελλάδα. Παρόλο που μπορεί να αναπτυχθεί στο μέγεθος πολύ μεγάλου δέντρου, η συνήθης εικόνα που παρουσιάζει είναι αυτή του μικρού, πολύ διακλαδισμένου και πυκνού δέντρου ή θάμνου, σε σχετικά χαμηλό υψόμετρο. 
Το ιδιαιτέρως μακρόβιο αυτό φυτό, διακρίνεται εύκολα από τα πολύ χαρακτηριστικά, μικρά φύλλα του, και τα έντονα αρωματικά, λευκά με κοκκινωπούς στήμονες άνθη, τα οποία ανθίζουν στα μέσα της άνοιξης (αρχές Μάη). Παρόλο που είναι φυτό φυλλοβόλο και γεμάτο αγκάθια, ο Crataegus monogyna χρησιμοποιείται ευρέως (όχι όμως στην Ελλάδα) ως κλαδεμένος θάμνος - το αγγλικό του όνομα "hawthorn" φαίνεται πως σημαίνει "αγκάθι του φράχτη", εξαιτίας της κοινής χρήσης του ως φράχτης αδιαπέραστος από τα ζώα στην αγγλική ύπαιθρο.
Το ξύλο του κράταιγου είναι πυκνό, βαρύ και πολύ σκληρό (από όπου και το όνομα κράταιγος = κραταιός). Τα άνθη, φύλλα, και οι μικροί κόκκινοι καρποί του είναι φημισμένοι για την καρδιοτονωτική τους δράση - είναι εξάλλου γνωστό το φυτό ως "τροφή της καρδιάς". Οι καρποί γίνονται και μαρμελάδα.
Η αναγνώριση του κράταιγου στο δάσος, ακόμη και σαν μικρό νεαρό φυτό, έχει ένα ιδιαίτερο νόημα προστασίας και καθοδήγησης.
