Miniature flowering plant

A really miniscule flowering plant, Erophila verna.

 The tiny little plants in these images were found in mid-February, in many sites around Thessaloniki.
The graceful plants form quite large colonies of simple hairy leaf-rosettes, that produce relatively tall flower stems. The white flowers are slightly bigger than moss seed capsules! I haven't a clue what it's name might be, though it isn't a rare species. Anybody some idea?

The name for this plant turns out being Erophila verna; a name that for some reason sounds very familiar. It blooms very early in spring and it is a species widespread in most of Europe and N. America.

  Τα μικροσκοπικα φυτά στις φωτογραφίες βρέθηκαν στα μέσα Φλεβάρη σε αρκετά σημεία γύρω από την Θεσσαλονίκη. Οι χαριτωμένοι ρόδακες σχηματίζουν μεγάλες αποικίες, και παράγουν έναν αναλογικά μακρύ ανθοφόρο βλαστό. Τα λευκά άνθη είναι ελάχιστα μεγαλύτερα από την κάψουλα σπόρων των βρύων με τα οποια συμβιώνουν. Μέχρι στιγμής δεν κατάφερα να εντοπίσω την ονομασία τους, παρότι δεν φαίνεται να είναι κάποιο σπάνιο είδος. Καμιά ιδέα κανείς;

Erophila verna είναι εν τέλει το "δυσεύρετο" όνομα που μοιάζει πολύ οικείο, σαν να το έχω ξανακούσει. Ένα από τα πιο πρώιμα ανοιξιάτικα λουλούδια, η Erophila verna φαίνεται πως είναι πολύ διαδεδομένη σε όλη την Ευρώπη και την Β. Αμερική.

Sedum hispanicum

 Blooming Sedum hispanicum (the tiny white flowers in the left bottom corner are of Scleranthus perennis).

  Sedum hispanicum is another very small succulent plant of many regions of  S. Europe and the Middle East (some of its former names are Sedum glaucum and Sedum eriocarpum). A popular rock garden plant, Spanish sedum is a beautiful perennial ground covering plant.

   Το Sedum hispanicum είναι ένα ακόμη πολύ μικρό παχ'υφυτο, αυτοφυές της Νότιας Ευρώπης και της Μέσης Ανατολής (μερικές από τις προηγούμενες ονομασίες του είναι Sedum glaucum και Sedum eriocarpum). Το ισπανικό sedum είναι ένα όμορφο πολυετές φυτό, που συχνά χρησιμοποιείται σε βραχόκηπους και γλάστρες.

Star moss

Polytrichum commune, common hair moss.

  Polytrichum commune is a beautiful moss species, also known as common hair or haircap moss, but I prefer the name "star moss" instead, which appears to be a very obvious name when walking in the woods after it has been raining for days. The name "commune" means common, and together with Hypnum cupressiforme they are, fortunately, the most frequently occurred moss species in the woodlands around Thessaloniki. Star moss, is mainly a ground covering moss, forming a thick and dense carpet, that is surprisingly revived by the rain.

  Το είδος Polytrichum commune είναι ένα πανέμορφο είδος βρυόφυτου που σχηματίζει έναν παχύ και πυκνό τάπητα στο έδαφος, και που μοιάζει με σχέδιο από φωτεινά πράσινα αστεράκια. Το όνομα "commune" σημαίνει κοινό, και μαζί με το Hypnum cupressiforme αποτελούν τα δύο πιο διαδεδομένα είδη, στα δάση γύρω από την Θεσσαλονίκη. Μένει σχεδόν απαρατήρητο σε συνθήκες ξηρασίας, ενώ προκαλεί έκπληξη με την αναπάντεχη αναζωογόνησή του από την ανοιξιάτικη βροχή.

Beautiful and common, Hypnum cupressiforme.

  Hypnum cupressiforme, also called cypress-leaved moss, is a very common, and very widespread around the world, moss species. Very soft and dense, this beautiful moss was formerly used as a filling for pillows and mattresses (hence the genus name from the Greek Hypnos = sleep). It is a moss found growing on tree trunks, rocks and on the ground facing north. Hypnum cupressiforme is a highly variable species and numerous varieties have been described.

  Το πολύ όμορφο Hypnum cupressiforme, είναι ένα πολύ κοινό και πολύ διαδεδομένο είδος βρύων, που φυτρώνει σε κορμούς δέντρων, πάνω σε πέτρες, καθώς και στο έδαφος με βόρειο προσανατολισμό. Το όνομα του γένους Hypnum προέρχεται από τη λέξη ύπνος, εξαιτίας της πυκνότητας και απαλότητάς του, και της παλαιότερης χρήσης του για το γέμισμα των μαξιλαριών και των στρωμάτων. Το Hypnum cupressiforme είναι ένα είδος που απαντάται με πολλές παραλλαγές, και υπάρχουν πολλά καταγεγραμμένα υποείδη.

The "fern moss", Selaginella denticulata.

  The crawling moss-like plant in the pictures is neither a moss nor a liverwort. A member of the Spike-moss family (Selaginellaceae), it belongs to the division of Lycopodiophyta.
This is the stunning "fern moss" Selaginella denticulata, or Mediterranean Clubmoss.
«Ferns of the Selaginella genus, along with Lycopodium and Isoetes, are the oldest and most primitive vascular plants currently existing on Earth, as they appeared about 150 million years before the dinosaurs, in the Carboniferous period (350-290 million years ago). Selaginella denticulata's evolutionary ancestors, the Lycophyta, reached the size of large trees with a trunk and woody branches covered with leaves up the stem. They lived on coastal wetland soils in a tropical climate, making it easier to reproduce by spores. The remains of these extraordinary plants became our largest deposits of coal». ______________________________________________________________________


  Το μικροσκοπικό φυτό στις φωτογραφίες, δεν είναι ούτε βρυόφυτο ούτε liverwοrt, αλλά ανήκει στην οικογένεια Selaginellaceae, και στην ευρύτερη κλάση των Λυκοποδιόφυτων.
Πρόκειται για την εντυπωσιακή Μεσογειακή βρυόφτερη, Selaginella denticulata.
«Οι φτέρες του γένους Selaginella, μαζί με τα γένη Lycopodium και Isoetes, είναι οι αρχαιότερες φυτικές μορφές, που διαθέτουν αγγεία για την κυκλοφορία των υγρών, σήμερα σε ολόκληρο τον πλανήτη, καθώς εμφανίστηκαν στη Λιθανθακοφόρο περίοδο (350-290 εκάτ. χρόνια πριν),150 εκατομμύρια χρόνια πριν τους δεινόσαυρους. Πρόγονοι της Selaginella denticulata, είναι τα Λυκόφυτα τα οποία είχαν το ύψος ψηλών δέντρων με κορμό και ξυλώδεις βλαστούς καλυμμένους με φύλλα. Ζούσαν σε τροπικούς παράκτιους υγρότοπους, διευκολύνοντας την αναπαραγωγή τους με σπόρια. Τα λείψανα αυτών των εκπληκτικών φυτών μετατράπηκαν στα μεγαλύτερα αποθέματα λιθάνθρακα του πλανήτη».
