   Geranium versicolor is a geranium species native to Italy, Greece, Albania, and former Yugoslavia, and an introduced species in only a few other European countries. Formerly known as Geranium striatum, it is commonly named Veiny Geranium or Wood Cranesbill. This is a perennial geranium that is semi-evergreen, occurring as a flourishing green ground cover in moist, partly shaded areas in deciduous woodlands. The large, five-lobed leaves are deeply veined, usually bearing brown blotches on the inner end of each lobe. The white flowers are uniquely adorned with an intricate, violet, linear design.
Geranium versicolor has a long flowering season, and is frequently used in gardens as a slug-resistant ground cover, in shaded areas.

  Το Geranium versicolor (η προηγούμενη ονομασία ήταν Geranium striatum) είναι ένα γεράνειο ενδημικό της Ιταλίας, της Ελλάδας, της Αλβανίας και της πρώην Γιουγκοσλαβίας, το οποίο έχει εισαγχθεί και σε λίγες άλλες ευρωπαικές χώρες. Πρόκειται για ένα πολυετές, σχεδόν αειθαλές φυτό, που καλύπτει υγρές, ημισκιασμένες περιοχές σε φυλλοβόλα δάση. Τα σχετικά μεγάλα φύλλα του που έχουν πέντε λοβούς και βαθειά εντυπωμένες φλέβες, παρουσιάζουν, συνήθως, χαρακτηριστικές καφέ πιτσιλιές στις εσωτερικές γωνίες των σχισμών. Τα λευκά λουλούδια είναι μοναδικά διακοσμημένα με ένα πολύπλοκο σχέδιο από βιολετί-λιλά γραμμές.
Το Geranium versicolor έχει μια μεγάλη περίοδο ανθοφορίας, και χρησιμοποιείται αρκετά συχνά σε σκιασμένα τμήματα κήπων, ως εδαφοκάλυψη ανθεκτική στα σαλιγκάρια.

Geranium sanguineum

  Geranium sanguineum is a geranium species of rare beauty, native to Europe and W. Asia. The deeply divided leaves of this perennial herbaceous plant, are  fine-textured and with impressed veins. The specific name "sanguineum" does not refer to the violet-magenta flowers, but to the leaves that turn red in Autumn. The stunning, large, delicate flowers make a breathtaking encounter with the plant in the dry bushy hillsides and rocky slopes where it is usually found growing (up to 1,200 m).
Geranium sanguineum is a species cultivated in gardens for its beautiful dark green foliage and the extended period of its flowers, that bloom from late spring to late summer. It is also a relatively drought tolerant plant.

  Το Geranium sanguineum είναι ένα γεράνειο ασυνήθιστης ομορφιάς, ενδημικό της Ευρώπης και Δ. Ασίας. Τα έντονα διαχωρισμένα φύλλα αυτού του πολυετόύς φυτού, που δεν σχηματίζει μόνιμους ξυλώδεις βλαστούς, έχουν μια χάρτινη βελούδινη υφή, και καθαρά εντυπωμένες φλέβες. Το όνομα "sanguineum" αναφέρεται στην αλλαγή χρώματος των φύλλων, τα οποία γίνονται κόκκινα το φθινόπωρο. Τα υπέροχα, μεγάλα φούξια άνθη του κάνουν συναρπαστική τη συνάντηση με το φυτό, στις θαμνώδεις και βραχώδεις βουνοπλαγιές όπου και φυτρώνει (μέχρι τα 1.200 μ).
Το Geranium sanguineum καλλιεργείται συχνά σε κήπους, για τα όμορφα σκούρα πράσινα φύλλα του και για τη μεγάλη περίοδο ανθοφορίας του, που διαρκεί από τα τέλη άνοιξης μέχρι τα τέλη καλοκαιριού. Είναι επίσης φυτό ανθεκτικό στην ξηρασία.

Geranium dissectum

  This is another interesting geranium species. Geranium dissectum or Cutleaf Geranium is an annual herbaceous species native to Europe, and an introduced species to many other continents. The velvety, five-lobed, palmate leaves are very distinctive, even though the upper leaves appear to be very deeply lobed compared to the basal leaves.
Geranium dissectum is a very vibrant and joyous plant, with bright pink-magenta flowers which are nonetheless small and not very apparent.

  Το  Geranium dissectum είναι ένα ακόμη ενδιαφέρον είδος γεράνειου, ενδημικό της Ευρώπης, το οποίο έχει προσαρμοστεί και σε πολλές άλλες ηπείρους. Τα βελούδινα παλαμοειδή φύλλα του που είναι χωρισμένα στα πέντε, είναι πολύ χαρακτηριστικά παρόλο που τα πάνω φύλλα έχουν πολύ εντονότερες πτυχώσεις από τα φύλλα της βάσης.
Τα έντονα, σχεδόν φούξια λουλούδια του Geranium dissectum είναι πολύ μικρά και σχετικά αφανή. Ωστόσο, ολόκληρο το φυτό αποπνέει μια έντονη ζωηράδα και μια χαρούμενη διάθεση.

Geranium purpureum

  Geranium purpureum, commonly known as Little Robin (also Lesser or Purple Herb Robert), is a geranium very easily overlooked as Geranium robertianum. I find that this classification only underlines the exceptional beauty of G. robertianum, of which it is almost a faithful replica. It also amplifies the relish of sharing the beautiful features of this unique species.
Once again, besides G. purpureum's relation to the sea, and to low elevation, the most apparent difference is found when comparing the flowers:
-- G. robertianum has more pale-pink, striped looking flowers, with larger and broader petals, whereas 
-- G. purpureum has simple and smaller, striking pink flowers with orange-yellow anthers and pollen, that are very similar to those of G. lucidum.

  Το Geranium purpureum είναι ένα είδος γεράνειου το οποίο δικαιολογημένα συγχέεται με το Geranium robertianum. Βρίσκω πως αυτή η ταξινόμηση υπογραμμίζει τη μοναδική ομορφιά του G. robertianum, του οποίου και αποτελεί ένα σχεδόν ακριβές αντίγραφο. Έτσι, αυτή η ανάρτηση ενισχύει την ευχαρίστηση της παρουσίασης των υπέροχων γνωρισμάτων του μοναδικού αυτού είδους.
Για μια ακόμη φορά, πέρα από την ιδιαίτερη σχέση του G. purpureum με τη θάλασσα, και την προτίμησή του σε χαμηλό υψόμετρο, η πιο προφανής διαφορά προκύπτει κατά τη σύγκριση των λουλουδιών τους:
-- το G. robertianum έχει πιο άτονα ροζ λουλούδια (με ραβδωτή εμφάνιση), με μεγαλύτερα και πιο πλατειά πέταλα, ενώ
-- το G. purpureum έχει μικρότερα, απλά άνθη, έντονου ροζ χρώματος, με πορτοκαλοκίτρινους ανθήρες και γύρη, τα οποία παρουσιάζουν μεγάλη ομοιότητα με τα άνθη του G. lucidum.

Geranium robertianum

  Geranium robertianum, commonly known as Herb Robert, is an annual (or biennial) plant, native to Europe and the Mediterranean basin, that has been introduced into many other temperate parts of the world. It can be found growing at altitudes of up to 1,500 m. The palmate leaves are fern-like, and the stems are reddish. The whole plant is hairy, and turns deep reddish when mature in the summer. The flowers have five pink petals with a striped appearance.
The plant gives off a distinctive geranium, grounding odor; leaves rubbed on the body are said to repel mosquitoes. It is also the source of a brown dye.

Geranium robertianum is a remarkably beautiful geranium species, and it is also a very distinctive one, despite its shocking similarity to Geranium purpureum.
There seems to have been some taxonomic confusion between the two species, to the point some botanists consider G. purpureum to be a subspecies of G. robertianum. The most apparent difference is found when comparing the flowers:  
-- G. robertianum has more pale-pink, striped looking flowers, with larger and broader petals, whereas  
-- G. purpureum has simple and smaller, striking pink flowers with orange-yellow anthers and pollen, that are very similar to those of G. lucidum.
Also, G. purpureum occurs more frequently in lowland situations close to the sea.

  Το Geranium robertianum είναι ένα μονοετές (σπανιότερα διετές) φυτό, ενδημικό της Ευρώπης και της Μεσογείου, το οποίο έχει εισαγχθεί και σε πολλές άλλες εύκρατες περιοχές του κόσμου. Απαντάται σε υψόμετρα μέχρι περίπου τα 1.500 μ. Τα παλαμοειδή φύλλα του θυμίζουν το σχήμα της φτέρης, ενώ οι βλαστοί έχουν πολύ συχνά κοκκινωπό χρώμα. Ολόκληρο το φυτό είναι χνουδωτό και αποκτά σκούρες πορφυρές αποχρώσεις προς το τέλος της ανθοφορίας του, μέσα στο καλοκαίρι. Τα λουλούδια έχουν πέντε ροζ πέταλα που δίνουν την αίσθηση του ραβδωτού.
Το φυτό αναδίδει μια χαρακτηριστική, βαρειά και γήινη, μυρωδιά γεράνειου. Λέγεται πως τα τριμμένα φύλλα του πάνω στο σώμα κρατούν μακρυά τα κουνούπια. Είναι επίσης η πηγή για μία καφέ βαφή.

  Το Geranium robertianum είναι ένα αξιοσημείωτα όμορφο είδος γεράνειοιυ, που είναι εύκολο στην αναγνώρισή του, παρά τη σχεδόν ενοχλητική ομοιότητά του με το Geranium purpureum. Φαίνεται πως υπάρχει μια σχετική σύγχιση ως προς την ταξινόμηση των δύο ειδών, σε σημείο κάποιοι βοτανολόγοι να θεωρούν το G. purpureum ως υποείδος του G. robertianum.
Η πιο προφανής διαφορά προκύπτει κατά τη σύγκριση των λουλουδιών τους:
-- το G. robertianum έχει πιο άτονα ροζ λουλούδια (με ραβδωτή εμφάνιση), με μεγαλύτερα και πιο πλατειά πέταλα, ενώ
-- το G. purpureum έχει μικρότερα, απλά άνθη, έντονου ροζ χρώματος, με πορτοκαλοκίτρινους ανθήρες και γύρη, τα οποία παρουσιάζουν μεγάλη ομοιότητα με τα άνθη του G. lucidum.
Επίσης, το G. purpureum απαντάται πιο συχνά σε χαμηλότερα υψόμετρα και κοντά στη θάλασσα.
