Celtis australis.

    Celtis australis is a gorgeous tree, native mainly to the Mediterranean region (Latin australis means "of the South"), that can grow 20 meters in height. Commonly known as European Nettle due to the shape of it's leaves or Honeyberry due the sweet taste of it's small fruit (dry, with a hard kernel), it usually has a smooth greyish bark.
This long living deciduous tree along with Ulmus minor are the two emblematic trees of Thessaloniki, but unfortunately only very rarely are they found growing in full height.

  Η Μελικοκκιά, Celtis australis, είναι ένα πανέμορφο φυλλοβόλο δέντρο της Μεσογείου το οποίο μπορεί να φτάσει τα 20 μέτρα ύψος. Οι καρποί του έχουν μια γλυκειά γεύση αν και είναι στεγνοί και με σκληρό πυρήνα, ενώ ο κορμός του είναι λείος και έχει γκρι χρώμα.
Αυτό το μακρόβιο είδος μαζί με το Καραγάτσι, αποτελούν τα δύο εμβληματικά δέντρα της Θεσσαλονίκης, που δυστυχώς όμως σπανίως αφήνονται να φτάσουν στο πλήρες τους ανάπτυγμα.
