Beautiful Euphorbia characias stems in the winter.
This is the grandiose spurge Euphorbia characias, a plant typical of the Mediterranean vegetation. Also known as the Mediterranean Spurge, it resembles a succulent plant in its ability to resist long periods of drought. It is an evergreen perennial that is widespread in Greece, preferring dry rocky slopes and scrublands, especially close to the sea.
Euphorbia characias is a wonderful garden plant. It is also said to be effective as medicine for treating skin ailments.
There are two subspecies of E. characias: subsp. characias, with distinctive dark brown nectar glands in the cyathia, and subsp. wulfenii, appearing in the attached images.

Η Euphorbia characias είναι ένα πομπώδες φυτό, χαρακτηριστικό της μεσογειακής χλωρίδας, γνωστό και ως Μεσογειακή Ευφορβία. Μοιάζει με παχύφυτο εξαιτίας της ιδιαίτερης αντοχής του στην ξηρασία. Είναι ένα αειθαλές, πολυετές φυτό, που είναι διαδεδομένο στην Ελλάδα, και που προτιμάει άνυδρες πετρώδεις πλαγιές και θαμνότοπους, ειδικά κοντά στη θάλασσα.
Η Euphorbia characias είναι ένα θαυμάσιο φυτό για τον κήπο. Είναι επίσης γνωστή ως φάρμακο κυρίως για τις παθήσεις του δέρματος.
Υπάρχουν δύο υποείδη της Euphorbia characias: η subsp. characias, με τους χαρακτηριστικούς σκούρο-καφέ αδένες των λουλουδιών, και η subsp. wulfenii, η οποία εμφανίζεται στις συνημμένες φωτογραφίες.
