Ipomoea purpurea

Ethereal purple-violet flowers of Ipomoea purpurea.

Ipomoea is a large genus of flowering plants in the family Convolvulaceae, with over 500 species, most of which are twining vines with trumpet-like flowers. Commonly known as Morning Glories they occur mainly in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. In Greece there are 5 species to be found, two of which (Ipomoea purpurea and Ipomoea acuminata) have been introduced and cultivated as ornamental plants and only rarely naturalized in the wild.

Common Morning Glory, Ipomoea purpurea, is a twining vine from Mexico and Central America, with deep purple ethereal flowers that have a white glowing throat. It is a perennial plant that is usually treated as an annual species, planted by seed.
Ipomoea acuminata (also known as Ipomoea indica), is also native to tropical America, and only rarely found growing in the wild.

The other three species, Ipomoea imperati, Ipomoea sagittata and Ipomoea stolonifera are all small prostrate species that usually grow on sandy soil near the sea, and bear white or pink flowers. In Greece they are restricted to coastal locations in the south and on some islands.

The last images belong to the introduced species Ipomoea acuminata (Ipomoea indica).
