  Only a few thistle flowers have petals in the same way that other flowers do. But the genus Carlina has thistles with a very special feature: they all have shiny dry petals that stay on the flower like in the genus helichrysum.  

  Carlina acanthifolia is a thistle that unlike all other thistles produces a single, big golden flower directly on the ground, with no stem. This makes it the shortest of all! It's a spectacular sight when you meet them, like bright stars on the earth. No wonder why they use them as brilliant symbols of prosperity and protection. They are native to Greece in high altitudes, but all these photos were taken in the Spanish Pyrenees. 

  A very close relative is Carlina acaulis, which produces smaller white flowers that often extend a little above the ground.

Η λαμπερή Carlina

  Ελάχιστα είδη αγκαθιών μοιάζουν να έχουν πέταλα όπως τα περισσότερα λουλούδια. Όμως το γένος Carlina έχει πέταλα γυαλιστερά και στεγνά που μένουν πάνω στο λουλούδι όπως στο γένος helichrysum (ελίχρυσο). 

  Η Carlina acanthifolia είναι ένα είδος αγκαθιού που σε αντίθεση με όλα τα άλλα παράγει μόνο ένα λουλούδι, μεγάλο και χρυσοκίτρινο, απευθείας πάνω στο έδαφος, χωρίς μίσχο. Αυτό την κάνει να είναι το κοντύτερο από όλα! Είναι εντυπωσιακά αγκάθια, σαν φωτεινά αστέρια πάνω στη γη. Δεν είναι καθόλου περίεργο που στολίζουν μ'  αυτήν τα παράθυρα και τις εισόδους των σπιτιών, σα σύμβολο ευημερίας και προστασίας. Παρ' όλο που το είδος είναι ενδημικό και στην ελλάδα, σε μεγάλα συνήθως υψόμετρα, οι φωτογραφίες εδώ είναι τραβηγμένες στο ισπανικό τμήμα της οροσειράς των Πυρηναίων. 

  Στενή συγγενής της Carlina acanthifolia είναι η Carlina acaulis, η οποία παράγει μικρότερα λευκά λουλούδια τα οποία συχνά εξέχουν λίγο πάνω απ΄ το έδαφος.
