Geastrum

An Earthstar.

Geastrum (or Geaster) is a genus of over 50 species of attractive non-edible mushrooms. Earthstars, as they are commonly known, are round and look like small puffballs when young, but the outer layer of the fruiting body soon matures and opens like a flower, revealing the very thin, spherical spore sack, that lies awaiting the rain to release its spore powder through the mouth at the apex. Most species occur mainly in early fall, on moist soil, in deciduous or coniferous forests.
