"What concerns you (Cato) is why Pythagoras abstained from eating meat, but what troubles me is what on earth happened to that early man and he let the blood of a slaughtered being touch his mouth, lay his lips on the flesh of a dead animal and, laying the table with stale carcasses, he named delicacies and goodies those parts that only a while ago were growling, talking, moving and seeing. How did his eyes bear the sight of blood being shed from animals that were slaughtered, skinned, and cut to pieces; how could he bear the stench; even the thought of the offensive act didn't keep his tongue from touching alien sores and relishing the juices of gaping wounds.
-The animal hides shuddered and the meat on the spits groaned, both roasted and raw, when the voice of the oxen was heard (excerpt from one of Pindaros' poems).
All this of course is a figment of one's imagination, and fiction, but the feast is indeed monstrous, to hunger after animals that are still growling, to indicate which animals one should eat, to devise methods for seasoning, cooking and serving. “Εσύ (Κάτων) ρωτάς για ποιο λόγο ο Πυθαγόρας απέφευγε να τρώει κρέας, εγώ, αντίθετα, απορώ τι έπαθε και τι ένιωθε ο πρώτος άνθρωπος και ακούμπησε το στόμα του σε αίμα σκοτωμένου πλάσματος, πλησίασε τα χείλη του σε σάρκα πεθαμένου ζώου και, παραθέτοντας σε τραπέζι μπαγιατεμένα πτώματα, ονόμασε λιχουδιές και νοστιμιές τα μέρη που λίγο πριν βρυχόνταν, μιλούσαν, κινούνταν και έβλεπαν. Πώς τα μάτια του άντεξαν να δουν αίμα πλασμάτων που σφάζονταν, γδέρνονταν, διαμελίζονταν, πώς η όσφρησή του άντεξε την αποφορά, πώς η σκέψη του μιάσματος δεν απέτρεψε τη γλώσσα να αγγίζει ξένα έλκη και να απολαμβάνει τους χυμούς και τα υγρά θανάσιμων τραυμάτων.
Τα δέρματα ανατρίχιασαν και τα κρέατα γύρω στις σούβλες μούγκρισαν ψημένα και ωμά, όταν ακούστηκε η φωνή των βοδιών (απόσπασμα από μία ωδή του Πινδάρου).
Τούτο βέβαια είναι πλάσμα της φαντασίας και μύθος, το δείπνο όμως είναι στ’ αλήθεια τερατώδες, να πεινάει κάποιος για ζώα που μουγκρίζουν ακόμα, να υποδεικνύει με ποια ζώα πρέπει να τρεφόμαστε, και να επινοεί μεθόδους για την άρτυση, το ψήσιμο και το σερβίρισμα των φαγητών. Την περίπτωση εκείνου που εγκαινίασε την τακτική τούτη πρέπει να εξετάσει κάποιος και όχι αυτού που τη σταμάτησε έστω και αργά.” [Πλουτάρχου (45-120μΧ), Περί σαρκοφαγίας, 933 B-C].
