Verbascum xanthophoeniceum

 

  Verbascum xanthophoeniceum is a small, rare and rather inconspicuous species that occurs in humid deciduous forests. Native to N. Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey in Europe, it is very similar to V. phoeniceum which instead of yellow bears purple flowers (also white or pink). The leaf rosettes are formed flat on the ground, with dark green and purple tinged leaves that are deeply veined and almost glabrous. The distinctive inflorescence with the small yellow flowers, is similar to that of pretty V. arcturus, which is also rare and a species endemic of Crete.

There are quite a few very interesting, rarely occurring verbascum species, some of which are relatively known like Verbascum acaule (a beautiful stemless plant looking like a yellow primrose), endemic to mount Chelmos and Taygetos, the above mentioned V. arcturus and V. phoeniceum, V. levanticum native to S.E. Aegean, Cyprus, the Middle East and Portugal, V. pycnostachyum native to Samos and W. Turkey, and the spiny mullein, V. spinosum, also endemic of Crete.

  Το Verbascum xanthophoeniceum είναι ένα μικρό σπάνιο και σχετικά αφανές είδος βερμπάσκου το οποίο απαντάται σε υγρά φυλλοβόλα δάση. Πρόκειται για ένα αυτοφυές φυτό της Β. Ελλάδας, της Βουλγαρίας και του ευρωπαικού τμήματος της Τουρκίας, που παρουσιάζει μεγάλη ομοιότητα με το V. phoeniceum, το οποίο αντί για κίτρινα λουλούδια έχει μωβ (και λευκά ή ροζ). Οι ρόδακες είναι επίπεδοι με το έδαφος, με φύλλα σκουροπράσινα με μωβ αποχρώσεις, που είναι φλεβώδη και σχεδόν γυαλιστερά. Η χαρακτηριστική ταξιανθία με τα μικρά κίτρινα άνθη μοιάζει πολύ με εκείνην του χαριτωμένου V. arcturus, ενός σπάνιου ενδημικού της Κρήτης.

Υπάρχουν καθώς φαίνεται αρκετά ενδιαφέροντα σπάνια είδη, μερικά από τα οποία είναι σχετικά γνωστά, όπως το Verbascum acaule (ένα όμορφο, χωρίς στέλεχος φυτό που μοιάζει με κίτρινη πρίμουλα), είδος ενδημικό του Χελμού και του Ταύγετου, τα ήδη αναφερθέντα V. arcturus και V. phoeniceum, το V. levanticum που είναι αυτοφυές του Ν. Α. Αιγαίου, της Κύπρου, της Μέσης Ανατολής και της Πορτογαλίας, το ενδημικό της Σάμου και της Δ. Τουρκίας V. pycnostachyum, και το ακανθώδες βερμπάσκο, V. spinosum, που είναι επίσης ενδημικό της Κρήτης.
