Aster tripolium

  Aster is a large and greatly diverse genus of about 180 flowering plant species of Eurasia. Many of these are popular garden plants bearing attractive and colorful flowers in September. Like the genus Asteriscus, the name Aster is derived from the ancient Greek word for star (αστήρ). At least five species can be found in Greece.

Aster tripolium, commonly known as Sea Aster, is a perennial plant of northern Europe that occurs in salt marshes and on the seashore. It has fleshy leaves and distinctive flowers with purple ray florets and yellow disk florets, flowering September and October. In Greece Aster tripolium is restricted to a few areas in the north where it flourishes, but it is generally considered a rare species.
Aster tripolium bears flowers quite similar to those of the high elevation species Aster alpinus, which is also rare.

  Το γένος Αστήρ (Aster), είναι ένα μεγάλο και ποικιλόμορφο γένος 180 περίπου ειδών της Ευρώπης και της Ασίας, εκ των οποίων πολλά είναι δημοφιλή καλλωπιστικά φυτά με πολύχρωμα ελκυστικά λουλούδια που ανθίζουν τον Σεπτέμβριο. Τουλάχιστον πέντε είδη απαντώνται και στην Ελλάδα.

Το είδος Aster tripolium, το οποίο είναι γνωστό στα αγγλικά ως Αστέρι της Θάλασσας, είναι ένα πολυετές φυτό της βόρειας Ευρώπης που φυτρώνει αποκλειστικά σε αλυκές και κοντά στη θάλασσα. Έχει σχετικά σαρκώδη φύλλα και χαρακτηριστικά λουλούδια με μωβ πέταλα τα οποία περικλείουν ένα σύμπλεγμα κίτρινων ανθέων (Σεπτέμβριο και Οκτώβριο). Στην Ελλάδα το είδος αυτό είναι περιορισμένο σε λίγες περιοχές στα βόρεια όπυ και ακμάζει, γενικά όμως θεωρείται σπάνιο.
Το Aster tripolium έχει λουλούδια αρκετά όμοια με του αλπικού είδους Aster alpinus, το οποίο είναι και αυτό σπάνιο.
