Polypodium vulgare

This small and beautiful fern is what seems to be the descendant of a tropical species that adapted to the cold conditions after the climate changes due to the last pole shift. Polypodium vulgare is found growing in the shade, on old walls and cracks in rocks, developing along a horizontal rhizome. The sori (clusters of spores) are found on the lower side of the leaves (fronds) and range in color from bright yellow to orange. In Greece one can find another very similar species, Polypodium cambricum, and the two can only be distinguished from each other by a number of micro-morphological characteristics. Unless someone knows what these are, people choose the name of common Polypody ("vulgare" means common).
