Lamyropsis cynaroides

Lamyropsis cynaroides dry flower head.

Eight years ago, in summer 2004, I found this beautiful thistle drifted on a remote rocky seashore in South Crete. Back then I  thought it was another common thistle that I just happened to notice; but I was really drawn to it so I kept it. All these years nothing came close to its unique harmony and slenderness. Only now, having gone through the majority of Greek thistle species, I can identify it.
Lamyropsis cynaroides is a perennial thistle that is almost endemic to Crete. It has beautiful leaves quite similar to those of Ptilostemon afer, and when in full bloom it may be confused with an Onopordum species.
