Herniaria incana

The unusual grey-green carpet of Hernaria incana.

    This beautiful bright perennial is one of the least known plants, as it hardly ever attracts any attention in its natural habitat. Herniaria is a genus of very distinctive, mostly perennial, plants that form a fairly flat and dense carpet of grey-green leaves and crawling stems. In Greece there are 9 species and subspecies, of which Herniaria incana is the most outstanding. Although all Herniarias are smooth, they are very hardy species, tolerating human and animal stamping. They also have a long tap root that allows them to resist the heat, as they enjoy growing in full sun. Their tiny flowers are barely visible and without petals, like those of Teucrium polium, and leave a very unusual felty effect during summer. Herniaria incana is a hairy plant like Herniaria hirsuta, but she is the most light colored of all species (she is also known as gray rupturewort). Depending on the weather, foliage may turn bronze-red during winter. This humble species is an astringent,  powerful diuretic and expectorant herb, and is being introduced in landscaping as a ground-cover plant.

  Το όμορφο και φωτεινό αυτό φυτό, είναι ένα από τα λιγότερο γνωστά φυτά, καθώς ελάχιστα προκαλεί την προσοχή στο φυσικό του περιβάλλον. Το γένος Herniaria είναι μια ομάδα μικρών χαρακτηριστικών φυτών, συνήθως πολυετών, τα οποία σχηματίζουν έναν πυκνό επίπεδο τάπητα από πρασινογκρί φύλλα και έρποντες μίσχους. Στην Ελλάδα υπάρχουν καταγεγραμμένα εννέα είδη και υποείδη, από τα οποία η Herniaria incana είναι το πιο εντυπωσιακό. Παρότι όλα τα είδη Herniaria είναι απαλά φυτά, είναι εξαιρετικά ανθεκτικά στο πάτημα από ανθρώπους και ζώα, καθώς και στη ξηρασία, διαθέτοντας μία μακριά κεντρική ρίζα. Τα μικροσκοπικά άνθη της Herniaria incana είναι χωρίς πέταλα, όπως του Teucrium polium, και αφήνουν μια βελούδινη αίσθηση μέσα στο καλοκαίρι. Η Herniaria incana είναι ένα χνουδωτό φυτό, όπως και η Herniaria hirsuta, όμως είναι το πιο γκρι και ανοιχτόχρωμο είδος. Ανάλογα με τον καιρό, το φύλλωμα αποκτά ερυθρές ανταύγειες το χειμώνα. Το ταπεινό αυτό είδος είναι ένα στυπτικό, διουρητικό και αποχρεμπτικό βότανο, και έχει ήδη εισαχθεί στην αρχιτεκτονική τοπίου ως φυτό εδαφοκάλυψης.
