Οtanthus maritimus

Otanthus maritimus or "cottonweed" in mid summer.

Otanthus maritimus (formerly Diotis maritima) is another striking grey-green, to almost white, species, that is found growing on sandy soils in coastal areas and right on the seashore. It is native to the Mediterranean region and W. Europe. The new shoots, stems, leaves and flower buds, are fully covered with a fine, white, cotton-like thread, that protects the plant from the heat; hence its common name "cottonweed" (click here for some exquisite close-ups). Otanthus maritimus belongs to the same plant tribe as the daisy (Anthemideae). This soft and rather unusual plant, should be protected.
