Phlomis fruticosa

Phlomis fruticosa grey-green, sage-like leaves.

Phlomis fruticosa is a handsome Mediterranean species, native to Greece, Italy, Albania, Cyprus, Turkey, and regions of the former Yugoslavia. This large woody shrub is an evergreen perennial, with very soft, wooly, grey-green leaves, that are silver-grey to white on the undersides. The leafs closely resemble sage, and for this reason it is commonly known as the Great Sage or better, Jerusalem Sage. Even so, Phlomis fruticosa is not an aromatic plant.
In Greece, where one can find another eight species and subspecies of the Phlomis genus, you can't miss it, especially if you visit coastal areas of low elevation - it is fairly abundant on many of the Greek islands. Phlomis fruticosa is a popular plant in ornamental gardens for over 400 years, although not in Greece, as yet.
The plant, that is tolerant both to heat and cold, bears spikes of butter-yellow flowers that are arranged in whorls round the stems. These large tubular flowers cannot be harvested by bees.

Phlomis fruticosa loves dry rocky soil, especially with a good sea view.

  2. Phlomis Fruticosa is one of my most favourite plants and one of those I have painted. I have always been dreaming of having a rock garden with these plants. I had no idea there was a pink variety.
