Phlomis samia

Press-dried leaves of Phlomis samia. The velvety leaves are green on the upper side and almost pure white on the lower.

Phlomis samia is one of the nine species and subspecies of the Phlomis genus in Greece, including Phlomis fruticosa that we have already seen. This plant is native to Greece, Northern Africa, southern parts of the former Yugoslavia and Turkey. The specific name originates from the Greek island of Samos. It is found growing in high elevations (500 - 1,500 m.), in mountain pastures and wood margins, both in full sun and semi-shaded areas. The beautiful, heart-shaped, large leaves are thick and velvety, green on the upper side and almost pure white on the lower.
The unusual flowers of Phlomis samia are pink with green-violet hues, and are arranged in dense whorls, round very long stems. The plant is a herbaceous perennial, with no woody stems nor leaves remaining in winter.

Happy spring equinox!

  1. That's the one I was talking about when I talked about the pink variety of Phlomis fruticosa. That's really beautiful.
