Thymelaea hirsuta

  Apart from the Christmas rose, and the very distinctive aromatic flowers of the Loquat tree (Eriobotrya japonica), there are other plants that bloom in wintertime. A very humble but very interesting one is Thymelaea hirsuta (mitnan). A perennial, evergreen, shrub, used to make strong rope and paper. The stems of this desert shrub are densely-branched and covered with small overlapping leaves- scale-like and leathery -, which are pressed against the stem. The plant's roots can extend to a depth of 3.5 m, helping the it obtain water in harsh desert environments. Thymelaea hirsuta grows in the Mediterranean coastal plains, the Sinai Peninsula and other Saharo-Arabian deserts. The pictures of the blooming plant were taken this Christmas.

  Εκτός από το ρόδο των Χριστουγέννων, και τα πολύ χαρακτηριστικά αρωματικά άνθη της μουσμουλιάς (Eriobotrya japonica), υπάρχουν και άλλα πιο ταπεινά λουλούδια που ανθίζουν μεσ΄ το καταχείμωνο. Πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα είναι η περίπτωση της Thymelaea hirsuta, ενός αειθαλούς θάμνου που χρησιμοποιόταν στην κατασκευή σχοινιών και χειροποίητου χαρτιού. Οι βλαστοί αυτού του θάμνου της ερήμου είναι πυκνά διακλαδισμένοι και σκεπασμένοι με μικρά αλληλοκαλυπτώμενα φολλιδωτά φυλλαράκια. Οι ρίζες της Thymelaea hirsuta φτάνουν σε βάθος τα 3,5 μ, βοηθώντας το φυτό να βρίσκει νερό σε αντίξοο και άνυδρο περιβάλλον. Η Thymelaea hirsuta απαντάται στις ακτογραμμές της Μεσογείου, στην χερσόνησο του Σινά, στην Σαχάρα και σε άλλες Αραβικές ερήμους. Οι φωτογραφίες του ανθισμένου φυτού τραβήχτηκαν μέσα στα Χριστούγεννα.
